Blog: Why you should choose DA-IICT for your M.Tech
Kanupriya Dasgupta is in conversation with our faculty, Prof Aditya Tatu, Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Copenhagen, Denmark, and our current M. Tech program coordinator. Prof Tatu, who is also our MTech alumni, speaks about what makes M.Tech at DA-IICT so unique.
In today’s world computers are becoming smarter, as Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, a subset of AI, make tremendous strides in simulating human thinking. Research is constantly being carried out to develop new algorithms, allowing mobile broadband services, Internet of Things (IoT) applications and other technologies to a growing number of users. The robotic revolution which includes signal processing and mathematical methods for Communication Systems, RF Circuits, and Systems, Digital Communication, Wireless Communication Theory, Stochastic Signal Processing, etc are synonymous to internet evolution.
KD: Why one should study M.Tech in Information and Communication Technology at DA-IICT?
AT: DA-IICT’s comprehensive course and advanced teaching structure will prepare you for today’s fast developing area of Communication and Signal Processing technologies. KD: Can you elaborate more on the four specialization tracks?
AT: We understand the need for four different specialization tracks in today’s changing tech scenario. Therefore, at DA-IICT you will study course in the design and implementation of Systems Software, including Operating Systems, Compilers, and Networks. The course will also allow you to explore related areas such as Databases, Programming Language Design, Computer Graphics, or Web Security. The VLSI program at DA-IICT will focus on the development of hands-on skills in designing semiconductor devices and circuits, architecting systems using embedded components such as CPU, memory, and peripherals. Students will learn several topics that cut across different domains, starting from the lowest level of physical devices to the top-level of application development.
KD: What is the current job scenario and what is the importance of these courses?
AT: While the competition in the industry is yet to heat up in the coming months, the current talent pool in the IT Industry has already set their eyes on Artificial Intelligence as an avenue for lucrative paychecks and rewarding career path. So if you are an AI aspirant looking to land a job in the industry, the opportunities are aplenty.
There are so many amazing ways Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning are used behind the scenes to impact our everyday lives, and inform business decisions and optimize operations for some of the world’s leading companies. For example, Microsoft has Cortana, a virtual assistant; chatbots that run Skype and answer customer service queries or deliver info such as whether or travel updates and the company has rolled out intelligent features within its Office enterprise. Other companies can use the Microsoft AI Platform to create their own intelligent tools.
Similarly, Google is one of the pioneers of deep learning from its initial foray with the Google Brain project in 2011. Google first used deep learning for image recognition and now is able to use it for image enhancement. Google has also applied deep learning to language processing and to provide better video recommendations on YouTube because it studies viewers’ habits and preferences when they stream content.
Financial services to healthcare to the manufacturing sector to start-ups, AI and machine learning is in everyone’s walk of life.
KD: You did you do M.Tech from DA-IICT, what is the difference you see in course structure at present, then what it was 10 years back?
AT: I completed my M.Tech in the year 2005. Back in those days, there was no specialization offered and in the present scenario, the idea is to encourage interdisciplinary studies.
Our department today is home to the finest research faculty, with strong groups in the areas of Machine Intelligence, Data Analytics, Intelligent Systems, Cyber Security, Distributed Computing, Software Engineering, Natural Language Processing, Image Processing,Computer Vision, Speech Communication, RF and Antenna Theory, Signal Processing, Wireless Systems, LTE, 5G Technology and MIMO channel, Embedded Systems, VLSI Subsystem Design; FPGA, Low-power VLSI Design and Nanoelectronics.

KD: What are the different computing resources and research facilities available at the institute?
AT: DA-IICT is proud to offer students access to world-class computing resources in support of research. The RC has a rich and diverse collection of about 31020 books, 11230 e-books, 5674e-journals, 78 print journals, 10 databases, 663 theses and 3913 audio-visual material in the domain of ICT. DA-IICT has developed its own world-class laboratories supporting distinct research goals.
