Blog: Google lends artificial intelligence to corrosion detection project – Marine Electronics and Communications Magazine
Artificial intelligence (AI) is being used to help detect anomalies in ship structures in a project intended to enable remote inspection and improve monitoring.
Web service and cloud computing company Google, software developer SoftServe and class society ABS have completed a pilot project applying AI models to detect levels of corrosion and coating breakdown on ships and offshore structures.
The project demonstrated the accuracy of AI in detecting and assessing anomalies normally found during visual inspection. Techniques deploying AI could also be used to analyse images over time to better understand corrosion and coating breakdown trends, the partners said.
ABS chairman Christopher Wiernicki cited the project as an example of how digital innovation is changing the way surveys and maintenance strategies are carried out. Artificial intelligence would lead to �more condition-based approaches to class and maintenance,� he said.
�We are building a future in which digital tools can remotely assess the condition of a ship or offshore unit, improving safety and reliability,� Mr Wiernicki added.
